I just changed my starter motor for one of these, on my 5424.

Starter Universal Marine Diesel 5424 M 30 M30 Kubota | eBay

Works great, so far. It was a nightmare getting the bolts out of the old one, but the new one is not so tricky as the OD is smaller, so it's much easier to reach the bolts.

Painted it gold, first, of course.

The old one had a problem with, very occasionally, not turning over.

Hi Mark.

Your link says $80 for a starter!? Can that be right? TOAD says a 5424 starter engine is $2135.

John.
The Ebay price is really low (and the TOAD price is just plain ridiculous)! I suspect the Ebay starter is a Chinese knockoff. Spider Marine lists the OE Nippondenso at $250 plus a core charge.

The starter from TOAD is certified to work in a marine environment. (I suspect it also helps to pay for the TOAD's daughter's wedding...)

I buy all of the parts for my Universal M-25 at TRACTOR dealers, that don't cater to rich "yachtie-types"

I doubt the one from TOAD is any different than one from a Kubota dealer, it's just relabeled by Westerbeke. Very expensive label. Never get engine parts from them of you can help it. The one from eBay is probably a Chinese knockoff, but if it works, it works. Chinese or Japanese, not much difference.

Pretty sure that when you add the Universal "gold" paint you're adding coupla $1000 to the price.
... or you can buy the Universal "Gold" paint in a spray can for about $35.00 and send me the remaining $1865.00 in appreciation of my "free consulting." ;)

...and was the replacement part "marine" (ignition protected)?
I realize it's not a gasoline engine, but still...
That certainly is a good question, as gasoline is not the only flammable substance on a boat, It is advertised as a replacement for the Universal, not just the Kubota. So it would be worth asking. I wonder if the original had any changes to it.

Thanks! I'm about to replace mine.

I would encourage anyone removing a defective starter to take it an automotive alternator/starter repair shop and have it rebuilt. It can usually be done for a fraction of the cost of a new one. And you’ve already proven you could use a spare.

I've heard mixed reviews on those Chinese Ebay starters. Reliability is not great. The ones to replace Yanmar starters seem to have poor castings that crack.
