We are buying a sailboat that is currently registered in the UK. The import tax has already been paid by the owner. What documents will we need to receive from the owner to facilitate US documentation?

Tom:

When we bought a Swedish-registered boat (for which duty was also paid to Customs), the original builder''s certificate was a requirement of the USCG. In my case, I wrote to Halberg-Rassey in Sweden and it was quickly provided. In addition, I needed to provide a Bill of Sale and a written description (on the documentation application, if I remember correctly) of the ownership sequence (trail of owners).

Getting the right scoop on the *current* requirements is an important step in acquiring a boat to be documented; you need to call the USCG Doc Center in West Virgina on their 800#.
