Good day , all! I am soon to start some blue water travelling, and would like to make a video record of the trip (s). No doubt some of you experts out there have done just that; and possibly can suggest a suitable video camera for a novice photographer; I.E.: suggestions for a piece of gear that is simple, hardy, and reasonably water resistant.
Any ideas, anyone???

Thanks.

For our trip this year I piked up a Sanyo Xacti - WH1.

I got it for its waterproofness.

It is waterproof to 10 ft (3 meters).

A couple of things impressed me:
  • the camera seems pretty solidly built.
  • it's got a long battery life (3 hours - compared with 1 -2 hours)
  • the camera is small.
A few things that I don't like about the camera:
  • you have to have the screen open to operate the camera - there is no eye-piece - so I have to wear my glasses when taping.
  • there is no lens cap.
  • the lens gets foggy after it has been wet.
  • the file format for the video is MPEG4. I use Premier Pro to edit and it doesn't recognize MPEG4's so I have to convert the files to edit.
  • the still image resolution is 2 megapixels - suitable for internet but not for enlarging.
Overall though, and for its price, I like the camera and it is a good supplement to my Sony. I don't have to worry about water. The Sanyo has become my 'boat camera'.

My opinion on cameras, video or otherwise, is that it isn't a camera if it is in a protected box on the boat when you need it - too many people go out and buy expensive high end equipment that they never use because it is (a) expensive and too much to risk losing by carrying it around and (b) too big/bulky to comfortably carry. I believe the best camera is something small, inexpensive, and easy to replace, something you will have with you when you want to take a picture or video. These days the optics on all cameras are so good that unless you are taking professional photographs it almost doesn't even matter, even the cheapest of digital cameras take amazing digital photographs. It seems like many people who buy high end camera equipment end up never using it, they don't want to get it dirty, are afraid it will get wet or stolen, etc, and keep it locked away somewhere taking up space. Better to get the 50-80$us digital camera that you don't mind stuffing in your pocket, carry a ziplock bag to put it in when you want to take underwater photographs, because that usually works and only risking 50$us, who cares if it doesn't ? The worst that happens is you replace a 50$us camera.

Great advice WindMagic.

I carry both cheap and that expensive ( At least to me ) on board for all WindMagics reasons.
Having a prosumer mentality when it comes to photo equipment I gravitate toward the Pro end of things.... but also want the despencability and liquidity ..;)..cheap affords that when the time is right..

A couple tips:

I up load my pictures to my Laptop onboard every day so if the enevitabal happens I dont loose too many memories...and now getting into viedo myself pull out the tape and insert a fresh if I have some clips I dont want to loose even if the tape is 3/4 empty..cheap insurance bouncing around on deck.

Ebay is a great place to pick up <100.00 used mini DVD camcorders davy jones can have without sheading tears over.

I have these things on board but I get so caught in the moment when there is anything worth shooting that I just keep watching. I have a really beaten-up (from being banged against stuff while I'm not paying attention) and at the same time unused (because I always forget to) Canon digital still camera.

I have a family member who wants everything on "film" and it's astonishing how much he misses because he sees only what's in his view-finder. I believe you see a much wider perspective when you're watching not filming.

I prefer to rely on memory because it makes for great stories later on (even though some become hugely embellished over time :p ). I find that on the rare occasion that I did take pictures I have to really think about them to remember/describe the whole event.

But to each his own.

If you're serious about getting decent video, I'd highly recommend getting a Sony Mini-DV Handycam with a waterproof housing for it.

I like using the small digital waterproof cameras in the $200-300 range. They are shockproof, and I attach a wrist float to it. If it gets wet, falls overboard, etc, it's not a problem. My favorite is the Pentax W60, but I think they stopped making it. It can also take HD video, but not great quality.

Care to share your starting point with that suggestion..Sony has 200$ cameras as well..no difference in quality there.

Still-

The one I'm using currently is a Sony HCR-DC96, and the specifications for it can be seen here (PDF). The housing is pretty nice and can be seen here (PDF).
