Water lift muffler, has yours ever clogged ? Mine was still passing water , but i'm thinking restricted.
Flow to the raw water pump seemed good , raw water pump was good ( rebuilt it anyway ) heat exchanger seemed to flow good . Bought a new mixing elbow .
I haven't run it yet with all the new parts I'm putting it back together today . I'm thinking the only thing I haven't checked is the water lift .

Well got it back together . Ran good in the slip for 20 mins. in gear and at full throttle . I checked the muffler it seemed to flow good . Anyhow I was overheating, I changed everything that I talked about in the OP. Now the only thing I haven't changed is the thermostat . I'm going to do that tomorrow just for good luck . I should have done that when I had it all apart . The engine is a Yanmar 15 hp . 77' . The manual says the thermo . opens at 125 f- 52 c . What should it run at after say 1 hr . full load ? f ? After the test run it ran at 175 F

My Yanmar 3GM raw water cooled runs at about 150-165. Just a few days ago I used some Barnical Buster to clean the water passages on it. It worked well, lots of crud came flowing out the back end. Now it is running at about 135-150 so some success for me.

You mentioned a heat exchanger, which means your engine is fresh water cooled. They normally run hotter than a raw-water cooled engine, which is actually highly desirable. 175F is about right for a fresh water system.

Mark, regarding the Water Lift bizo .... on our old boat ours developed a leak. when we pulled it out to replace it the damn thing was probably 80% full of crap. Everything worked better after that. Engine (Buhk 24) though was sea water cool so no heat exchange. That thing never ran hot, indeed the problem was alwasy more how to bring it up to temp.

So in short ... ho boy do those things ever collect some garbage over the years.

So far so good , but I have yet to put some real hrs. on it . Soon we will . The whole take apart and put back together went OK except for a broken bolt in the exhaust manifold , I found a great place to burn it out and install a threaded insert , we did all four just for good luck . It was one of those R&R's where I could not say AhHa that was it . I'm thinking mixing elbow , but it wasn't that old (5yrs.) So I really don't know . tdw our water lift is 30 yrs. old and looks it , I'm think'in a new water lift ,(I know this is no excuse for good maintenance but), thing is we are getting a early summer and Ms. Westi has that look in her eyes (take me somewhere). But first a good shake down .
