While they are a ton of coin, I do like the Spectra 12 volt watermakers. If you can charge your house bank with wind or solar, you can truly be off the grid for extended periods.

As to warranty and cost. As the old oil change commercial said "Pay me now or pay me later". Frankly I have more confidence in my own mechanical skills than I do in modern corporations......
If you DIY you still have a warranty. Its' just individual parts from whoever you brought the item from.

There's some pretty good info here. I couldn't find the plans I used. A good high pressure pump is the biggest investment.
