I bought a Centaur last summer, and sailed it up to BC from Washington for a month in December. It was great.

 

I'm thinking of getting a Centaur......does that count????

I had one for 25 years. Loved it. Wanted a 36ft twin keel Solway but could not find one in decent shape this side of the Atlantic. Wound up getting a CSY instead. Love it, but miss the shoal draft and twin keels.

 

What was the hull number, do you remember? My boat was bought on the Chessy and has supposedly been here all her life.

I have seen a big drop in listings for Westerly's. 10 years ago there would be a lot of them on the various sale sites. Now they are rare (for the westen hemisphere). Too bad.

I was looking for a Berwick, but then upped my eyes to a Solway. Center cockpit, twin keel, 36ft. Only found 2 this side of the pond, one in Grenada, one Trinidad. The latter was a mess and way overpriced. Saw the one in Grenada but it had been neglected and even if given to me would have cost more to put in shape than buying one in Europe in sailaway shape. Conways were available but moe draft than I was willing to drag around the Chessie.

Centaurs are great Chessie boats. Tough, roomie, shoal draft. Fabuouls for Gunkholing. I had the B layout. It is no mere coincidence that the author of Cruising the Chesapeake: A Gunkholers Guide has a Westerly Berwick.

Btw, a fellow came through once who had a Pembroke - single keel version of Centaur. We sailed together and did not see any speed or pointing advantage to the single vs twin keels. Really, condition of sails, rig tuning and trim, bottom, and skipper skill are far more important.

 

Mine is CR2 and according to Trafalgar house came over on it's own bottom from England to the Chesapeake.
Sadly, it might be for sale if my fiancee can't get her heart problems sorted. I'm staying optimistic though and hope to get to the Bahamas by the years end. Too beautiful a boat to lose.

A Centaur may be nice sometime in the future though, if my wife and I decide to do some long term live-aboard cruising.

 

There's two Westy's sitting on the hard out front at Bay Boat Works yard on Hance's Point. NorthEast MD. I don't know the length/model; but they are decent size..mebbe 28-30 feet? Been sitting for quite some time. AT least one is (probably) for sale.

I am not trying to lure anyone away from Sailnet, but we have a Westerly Owners Association web forum in the UK, and a main Westerly Owners Association site.

I am moderator on the Forum, and would welcome more input from the USA, both on Sailnet and the WOA Forum.

You may or may not know, that spares for Westerly's are available from Trafalgar Yacht Services in the UK

Great to see a Westerly section here.

We have a Centaur which is based in Cardiff Bay, Wales and sail it on the Bristol Channel. It is hard to go sailing here without seeing another Westerly and most often it's a Centaur.

 

I am looking at ebay for it.Buyers pay bet 5-6k for them .

Owners relist them.

 

I have been thinking about buying a Westerly. Here is the 30 footer that caught my eye:

Centaur seems a bit small and slow for my liking.

 

No diesel in that boat, but the price was right.

 

No diesel on mine either and I've well used that engine bay for tools and stuff.
Slap an outboard on the back and go sailing. That's what the boat is for right?

 

Yes, outboards have some real advantages, cost being #1.
