The Plan: Jacksonville, FL to Port Morant, Jamaica, to and through the Panama Canal.

The reality:
  • 10 days
  • 7 cold fronts
  • Maximum winds 40 knots
  • Minimum winds 0 knots
  • Average winds 25 to 35 knots
  • Maximum seas 15 - 18 feet.
  • Minimum seas 2 feet
  • Average seas 10 to 12 feet
  • Lowest pressure 990 mb
  • Highest pressure 1010 mb
  • Highest instantaneous boat speed 16.9 knots
  • 1 waterspout at about 10 NM from Reboot
  • 3 thunderstorms
  • 1 1/4 crew injuries (laceration of head from hitting tang on winch, minor black and blue from refrigerator door dropping on finger)
  • Fresh water supply polluted with sea water
  • 1 hatch cover cracked
  • Percentage of time comfortably cruising - 3%
  • Percent of time hanging on for dear life - 97%
  • Destination reached - Oriental, North Carolina, USA.
  • Total distance 1099 NM

The conclusion:

March is not a fun month to be in the Atlantic Ocean

Fair winds and following seas :)

It would be a quite extraordinary passage would it not?

We got as far South as N 29 25.6 and as far East as W 074 00.0 We spent the rest of the time North and West trying to avoid storms and eventually to get to land to regroup.

This link (https://www.facebook.com/michael.coppola.509?fref=nf) may let you see my crew video of the waterspout and his injury. I don't know if his posts are public.

Fair winds and following seas :)

You went backwards!

Sorry/ I know the feeling of one step forward and 2 steps back.

The weather sucks.

Everyone safe = good ending.

How did salt water get into the fresh supply?
We think it either came in through the deck fill. which was tight, or through the vent hose. We were taking green water contiguously over the bow. There was enough water pressure to force an almost constant drip from the manual spout for about four hours on one tack. We don't really know.
