This may be a silly question but I found a few of these on my boat when I bought it and was wondering how to use them? They had a small piece of rope with a screw driven into it down it's length from the inside and then filler with expoy. Any direction on how I can re-use them would be appreciated.

Thanks!

depending on dimensions ... but they are presumably for your lifelines. There are some different models, those for wire (Norseman or something) and then there are those for some plastic lifelines, think these were called Polyfilla - surprisingly strong, used during 1970-ies, easy to handle but I would not use .. not now :)

Today one can use a thin Dyneema for liffe lines, or, of course wire.

if it's a mechanical wire rigging terminal there should be another part.. the ferrule that the strands get 'clamped' onto by putting those two parts together.. so dig around some more in your knickknack box... ;)

I wish that is what it was. It had a platic coated "wire" with poly standed core feeding into it. inside the housing a screw was driving into the core, expanding the plastic and locking it into the hosuing. I think the first poster is correct as my boat was made in the late 70's.

Those screws may have been some PO's kludge job, instead of using a proper "cone" to expand the wire. And it could have worked.

I'd try stopping by some rigging shops, or emailing (cropped & reduced!) pix to a few, to see if anyone recognizes them by brand and type. If you have any idea where the boat & PO might have been, look for someone in that area.

Re-using them? Same way if you're not going to put a load on them. But I wouldn't put a load on them without finding out what the original spec and proper assembly was.
