I've seen this knot a lot in the Caribbean and a bit in France, but I can't find it in any book. It's very compact and it jams very tight over time, but I'm reluctant to use it at the masthead, because I don't know anything about it.

Anyone know what it's called and whether its secure to use as a hitch?

This looks very much like the halyard knot that Jeanneau uses, and probably Beneteau as well. Even though I've got ABOK (Ashley's Book of Knots) in front me I can't find it, but there's a cool set of pictures on how to tie it that can be found here

Thanks, yes that's definitely it, although I'm never quite sure of the number of turns. There is one on my topping lift and it's great that it jams so tight that you never have to worry about that shackle jamming sideways.

Sounds like it should be good for my masthead halyard knot.

Hard to tell from the pic but it almost looks like a buntline hitch with an extra wrap. Perhaps with the extra turn it might be easier to untie than a buntline. The buntline is great as long as you don't want to untie it after it has been under a lot of strain for a time.

That looks like a noose knot but the bitter end is at the wrong end.

Correct. It is a buntline with a double turn. You have a good eye/memory. (And it is a bear too untie!!!)

Not a buntline -- bitter end would come out under final wrap, pointing away from shackle.
