Hi there,

I just bought a new boat and am trying to get a handle on the plumbing and wiring.

In the compartment under the sofa there are a bunch of piping and a strange white cylinder - shown in this attachment. Does anyone know what it is? All the writing on it has rubbed off

Sure looks like a carbon filter. They should be changed at least once per year, more often depending on use. We prefer to leave one in the cockpit locker to use right on the hose while filling our tanks. It's therefore available wherever we go. This way the water in the tank itself is filtered, rather than trying to clean it up between the tank and faucet. I buy a new one at the beginning of each season.

While I agree that it is most likely an in line water filter, it could also be a holding tank vent filter....

Do you have any idea where the hose runs to/from?

This was my first thought as well. Those other yellowish hoses in the pic may be the water lines.

Follow the hoses first to determine their purpose. Once you know what the hose does, you can figure out what the cylinder is for.

Personally, I'd be trying to find a way to tidy up that wiring.
Those crimp connectors don't look like marine connectors, more like the kind you get at an autoparts store.

Regards,
Brad

Yeah, I'm probably going to replace all the hoses.

If you think that wirings bad, you should see the back of the distribution panel! I tried mapping some of it yesterday but gave up.
