So it has been a quiet rainy day, cool, nice.
We are both quietly sitting here this evening reading when there is a “bonk” ”bap”“flappata, flappata, flappata.”

WT…????

It is a flying fish, nice size, has come in through the companionway, almost made the sink, and was flopping wildly on the floor.

I was thinking lunch, Admiral made me throw him back.

Cruised through hundreds of them some years back. Six or seven of them landed in the cockpit. Not a bad lunch at all.
Same trip picked up four squid the same way near Key West.

Flying squid??

Sent from my SM-G981W using Tapatalk
Yup ! Late at night in the dark on the way back to the boat in the dink. A whole school of them jump at the same time. I guess something was chasing them.

In Newfoundland, infrequently, the squid come in to spawn. They come up to the beach around midnight and you can pick them out of the watee. Me, being old, tired, and lazy skipped the midnight cappers but picked up 40 nice ones off the beach the next morning, still fresh but dead.

I deep fried and froze the lot. We ate squid for a whole week. Every recipe I could find or invent. Never had a bad meal. Quick fried they were tender. But we ran out of time and I gave the balance away.

Wow. I never imagined something like that. I would have liked to have tried some of those different ways to eat them.

How about ...
Cumin, coriander, garlic, white pepper and 4 stalks of lemon grass, one onion, two stalks of celery (greens and all), 2 sleeves of Korean fish powder and 2 limes all simmered in 3 cans of coconut cream and half a bottle of white wine.
When all those flavours have melded throw in some mussels, ,lobster, squid, fish, octopus, clams and any other seafood that you have lying around
