I'm looking to repaint my San Juan 21 this spring and I'm having trouble narrowing down a good brand of Gel Coat and also a preferred retailer to purchase it from. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll also need to repair the spider web cracks in the current coat.

Cabosil is the usual/preferred filler for 'artisan' gelcoat work.

If you havent done this before, I suggest "Professional Gelcoat repair without a mess" by John Gabriel (video/CD).

I'd not use gelcoat to 'paint' the hull.. any good fairing compound (Epifane makes a good one) can be used for preparation but you'll bet a much better result using a two part paint over gelcoat. Don't use run-of-the mill bondo fillers, they are generally hydroscopic.

Some two parts are better formulated for DIY application, and many work well with 'roll and tip' techniques with some practice, and, most importantly, good prep and the right conditions (temp/humidity)

we just regolcoated our decks...for the hull 2 part paint works great

gelcoat is messy and tricky with times...we had issues with orange peel and solidifying too quickly

honestly a roll and tip job would of been cheaper and faster but hey

in the end my decks look ok. not excellent

but im happy now
