I'm trying to find a good....reliable in-hull transducer with a simple digital display. I don't want to have to turn on my chartplotter to read the depth.
I'm certain some members here experience with these.
I've had the best luck using an Airmar Smart transducer when in a well. The more powerful the better, they seem to lose some capability shooting through the hull, ours is rated for 100 fathoms but cuts out at 50 (which is just what we need to set our prawn traps). I don't have a recommendation on a display, I ran ours to the Garmin chartplotter. The other one I installed in our last boat we used a Furuno display in the cockpit and it worked well but there must be other displays that are nema 2000. Use a zip lock bag (doubled) with mineral oil in it to "test" the mounting locations prior mounting your well.
Yes, the P79s is the best and will plug into my chartplotter without a sounder. I'm hoping to find one...or figure out whether a p79s or p79 (not smart and $100 less) can be hooked up to a simple digital readout.
