I have just bought on eBay a couple of used Big Bertha Barient 28 flat-top winches as secondaries for my old 36' ocean racer. I didn't realize that the bases for these winches were not included in the sale. Any suggestions?

Normally winch bases need to be custom made for the boat
Some nice ones here
Port Townsend Foundry in Washington

Another solution here
Primary winches and exhaust | Rhodes Bounty II Refit

These are the goto guys for Barient spares HUTTON-ARCO Yacht Winches

They can do bases at about $500 US

I have a pair of Barient 32 STs on my 1978 built boat and I think they will be original. It is known that the bases are cast ali and of poor quality. One of mine is showing signs of quite severe wastage through corrosion. I contacted Arco for a quote and they gave me $500.

Depends what you mean by "bases".

As you can see from the replies there are differing interpretations of what it means.

Are you talking about a type of bracket or pad to bolt them to the deck or a metal housing piece of the winch itself?

Pics would help.

"Are you talking about a type of bracket or pad to bolt them to the deck or a metal housing piece of the winch itself?"

Thank you, Knuterikt, TQA and SloopJonB. JonB's question helps to clarify. I have thick teak mounting pads from an old wreck that was dredged up from the bottom of Honolulu Harbor after the Japanese tsunami that washed ashore exactly four years ago today.

What I am talking about is the metal (aluminum, it seems) base or housing that encompasses the gears and bolt-holes on the bottom of my Barient 28s. I don't look forward to parting with a boat unit ($500) for custom-made metal bases.

Can I excavate the teak mounting pads? Is there another way?

I think you have a problem - finding those pieces for Barients will be more luck than anything - the company closed up shop more than 20 years ago.

Consignment shops and ARCO in Oz are probably your only hope. If they have them, ARCO will be new and $$$$$$

FWIW, Barients are such great machines that they are worth spending some time & money on.

I recently stripped my 37 year old Barient 32s.

They were in excellent order except for one of the bases which as you can see is badly corroded.

I understand this is a common issue and yours may well have crumbled.

TQA, Thanks for taking those photos of your winch bases. If they are that badly corroded, they must be made of cast aluminum, which in a salt-water environment, has eroded over time.

No bases at all came with my recent purchase of the Barient 28 flat tops, so I am looking around for a pair of them. But, I take pause, now that I see that the original bases were made of aluminum and have a bad reputation.

The primaries that I already have on the boat are self-tailing Barient 28s. I have not taken them apart, but they appear to have stainless steel bases. I wonder if those are after-market.

What material is the rest of those ST28's made of? Barient made winches in Aluminium, Stainless and Bronze, usually chromed.

Mostly it was only the drums that varied in material - the guts were mostly bronze with a bit of S/S and some dabs of plastic.

Sloop JonB, it looks like you have found the right place for the job. I have sent them a message requesting a quotation. Thanks to you.

Would you please be kind enough to share the quote when you get it. Or if not the exact figure, thus putting them on the spot, then a ballpark one. And also, what metal & finish choice you go with.

Thanks

Uncivilized, here is the quotation from Hutton Winches in Australia:

"I have just 2 stainless steel 28 Barient base in stock for $550.00 each, freight to Hawaii would be $120.00, total $1220.00US. Note these are the original bases manufactured in the USA.

Barient winch after they got taken over by Barlow only had aluminium bases, these we still manufacture for $440.00 each plus freight."

I asked for a quote on the mounting rings, NOT A WHOLE WINCH !...

Hmmm have you priced a quality winch recently. To replace my pair of Barient 32st with new winches of similar quality would be at least $6000 for a pair.

N.B. other than the base corrosion my winches show no signs of mechanical wear, I do have some minor finish issues like the chrome peeling off.

To the OP, have you talked to a machine shop? Some shops have CNC milling machines. Machine time for aluminum would be less than stainless steel. Its a ring with four tapped holes, its not rocket science.

I was thinking along those lines myself but a variation - they might be able to roll a ring of alloy, weld it together and weld on the tabs for fasteners.

At $500 each from Arco I'd imagine there are lots of shops out there who could do something custom for less.

Gentlemen,

What do you think of the idea of constructing the rings from ipe, Brazilian walnut wood? It would be a cinch to laminate two pieces of 1" ipe with the grains at 90 degrees to each other, and then to cut out a ring an inch wide.
