I am looking at installing a wind vane self steering device on my Contessa 32. Can anyone tell me of their personal experience with the Monitor, Navik, Fleming or Sailomat wind vanes. Any information would be helpful.

I helped my friend install the Monitor on his J35 for use in the Bermuda 1-2 this year. If you''re mechanically inclined and have help you can do this in a day. We loved it right from the start. There was a short learning curve and I was disappointed in the light wind performance (personally), but overall we loved it. Be aware it uses the apparent wind when you doze off. If you really want to be sold on the monitor send for their video.

My monitor works well, but not as well as my Autoheln. I have gotten used to pushing a button and changing course by 1or 2 degrees. I beleive that they now have an attachment to hook up a small tillerpilot tothe windvane and that should help keep the boat on a magnetic heading rather than on apparent wind heading.
Also use spectra lines on the vane as others have atendency to streach.

it''s very easy to hook up a small tillerpilot to the monitor.
they don''t sell the parts but it''s about a 2 hour install including the fabrication of the thing that goes on top of the paddle holder and the rail mount.

Our 1975 Grampian 26 has tiller steering and mid wheel steering. We usually use the wheel with no autohelm.
Is there any experienced Grampian users, who can suggest a specific autohelm. I would love to eliminate jiggling the wheel to stay on course.
