I am trying to troubleshoot my engine. symptoms are:
  • Engine starts and runs with the decompression lever on the flywheel (rear) side (Cylinder #1) closed & the other side (Cylinder #2) open. However it doesn't run when the decompression lever on the flywheel side open (Cylinder #1) & the other side (Cylinder #2) is closed.
  • The engine stalls out as soon as the alternator starts doing anything. I verified this by disconnecting the exciter wire that tells the alternator to generate current.
Now my questions are:
  • My understanding is the engine should run on any one cylinder - or will it only run on Cylinder #1? Otherwise I might have a compression issue on Cylinder #2. (I did check the valve clearances BTW, they were fine).
  • Could there be an issue with the alternator where it jams/locks when it tries generating power?
Looking for ideas on how to trouble shoot this issue before spending big $$$ on a mechanic.

Thanks!

Sounds like cylinder 2 is not working. Compression check is a good idea. Could just be a bad injector.
