Hello everyone. The motor started today, much to my and the rest of those rooting for me at the little neighborhood marina. Then I get the call to shut her off! Shes sprung a leak...my heart sank. The water pump was the culpret and water seemed to be spraying 360 deg from behind the pully. My guess, the bearings but I am a first time owner of a diesel motored sailboat. So its a water pump, how bad could they cost anyway, i mean its just a water pump. Then I get the news a new pump would run me $500. I was broken. So what does any poor sailor do, they search the internet. What I found surprised me and what was written, quoted below:
If it is the fresh water pump, you can probably find a mechanic who can
press out the shaft and replace the seal. Have him replace the bearing
while you are at it as all that leaking water has probably wiped out the
bearing.

If it is the raw water pump, you are in luck. Yanmar pumps use very
standard components. A little research will usually turn up a Jabsco or
Johnson impeller that will be an exact match. Pull the seals and bearings
out and take them to a bearing shop and they can match them up with
generic industrial parts. Buy about 3 sets each of bearings and seals. If
you do any cruising, having the extra parts is invaluable and at $4 a
piece, it isn't worth quibling over. Put the whole thing back together and
you are in business. If you had to purchase any special tools to
disassemble the pump, pack them up with your extra bearings, seals and
impellers and keep them on the boat. Raw water pumps have a habit of going
bad with some regularity.(thank you David, S/V Nausicaa)


This is the raw water pump...So, can anyone confirm or deny this?

I confirm it. My yanmar 2qm15 has jabsco pumps. There are rebuild kits, you can find a shop to rebuild your pump for $150-200, or do it youself.

so far so good, found the bearings (10 bucks each) and the seal (5 bucks) and the impeller (15 bucks). Bearings and spacers installed, everything lubed waiting for the inner seal to come in tomorrow as their box of them was empty. Getting 2 of everything needed and then 1 set gets packed on the boat. Was able to remove and seat bearings with a wood dowel (out) and 1/2 deep well socket (in). If I didn't have to wait on the seal this could have taken me less then an hour. Lots of good folks with kind advice on this site.

Sounds like you should have bought a rebuild kit which would have included the shaft. No way to make the seal more watertight. See my previous link with MaineSail's pump rebuild for comments about the shaft and seals.
