Hello, I have a Catalina 30 with many years of old bottom paint. I would like to have her bottom painted this spring.

What is the best paint to use in the Chesapeake Bay?

I heard that the Chesapeake Bay has worse fouling problems (barnacles and plant growth than than Floridia!

What should I pay to have my boat hauled out of the water, the bottom cleaned and two coats of a bottom paint that will give me at least one season of barnacle-free bottom?

I do not need a racing bottom as we are not into racing.

Thank you - Walter "Parrot Bay" Catalina 30 Shoal draft

Walter,
I'm not familiar with prices on the Chesapeake, but I'm going to venture a guess anyway... $1,200-$1,400 for two coats of ablative. This should include haulout, blocking, pressure wash, any scraping, prep work, painting and splashing. I would either go with what is on your boat now (if you can find out) or go with whatever your local yard suggests. They'll know.

hauling out Sunday 10 miles up the Potomac from the Bay, $1K for haul, block, pressure wash, paint, zincs...unless they find something unexpected. This includes almost 2 gallons of paint, which keeps climbing in price.

Best of luck, send me an email if you want the name

The head is fresh, the foot is salt.

Do you want hard paint (so you can scrub it) or soft paint (so you don't have to scrape the paint off in a few years)?

What type of paint do you have now?

Can't answer, not knowing, but it sounds like you want an ablative (soft) paint.

I like Interlux Micron and Interlux 66 (no freshwater). I have used both several times. They are $$$ but should get you 2 years, if you haul in the winter. 18 months if you stay in the water. Whether you need to strip the bottom, can't say. Unless the paint is loose, it is not required.

Yes, the Bay is tough that way.

I am in Rock Creek. We use Micron Extra Ablative, 2 coats, extra on leading edge surfaces on the keel and rudder. Last two years with a diver going down once each year. Dont forget to get an antifowling for the prop also.
Call Oak Harbor for their latest prices. (not affiliated with them)

Bottom painting & haulout Prices Chesapeake Bay Spring 2010

Hello Walter -- Here are some prices for paint and labor from the updated spring 2010 price sheet from the marina I use near Baltimore. They do nice work and work hard at saving their customers money instead of nickle and dimeing you!

++++++++++++++++++++ From Old Bay Marina example price sheet:

25' Sailboat or Powerboat bottom painted for $175.00 and includes taping waterline, all materials (less paint) tape, rollers brushes, etc.

30' Sailboat or Powerboat bottom painted for $195.00 and includes taping waterline, all materials (less paint) tape, rollers brushes, etc.

35' Sailboat or Powerboat bottom painted for $225.00 and includes taping waterline, all materials (less paint) tape, rollers brushes, etc.

We have the lowest prices on bottom paint - We beat West Marine's catalog prices on bottom paint.

Micron with Biolux $191.36 gal.
Act with Irgarol $99.99 $267.77 for 3 gallon pail
Vivid Free new bottom paint from Pettit only $175.00 gallon

Seacock valves and thru-hulls serviced - Reasonable rates on stuffing box re-packing, shaft and propeller service.

Cutless bearing replacement.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I must add that the marina DOES NOT sand your bottom for that price, they will Soda blast the bottom but this is very pricey at $40.00 per foot! They will pressure wash the bottom with a 4,500 PSI water blaster for free and this knocks off the loose paint and in most cases this is all that is needed for prep work --George

I'm fairly new to sailing and only have experience with one brand of paint and that's Petit Hydrocoat. Its a water based multiseason ablative. Based on talking to other boat owners around me, I'm convinced it is as effective as the higher price products and has done well in PS tests. On my previous boat we went 2 seasons with a haulout over the winter and then sold that boat. On the current boat I sanded the exisiting ablative to create "tooth" and put on two coats of Black Hydrocoat. The boat has been in the water since May of last year and was scrubbed by a diver once during the season. The boat hasn't moved since late October and currently has a 1/4" beard of slime, but no hard growth. I'll do a short haul in the spring to powerwash, check/replace zincs and repack the stuffing box and I'll be good for another season at least.

We hire a diver to do several of our boats and I don't need cleaning any more often that the guys using Micron or Interlux. Also, I used a short knapp roller then tipped with a brush and finally did a very light hand sanding and got a really smooth bottom, not racing smooth, but way smoother than a lot of boats I see in the yard.

Being a water based paint, Hydrocoat is a lot less troublesome for do it yourselfers since there aren't any fumes and it cleans up easily with water.

Prices for short haul?

I need to have a short haul for my 33ft boat, just an hour in the slings, sometimes called a "lunch haul". No other services needed. No powerwash, etc. I just want to replace zinc, clean depth-speed-temp sensors, maybe wipe down the hull with a sponge or squeegee.

My current marina wants $8.50/ft or about $280 to do this. This is much higher than I paid at my last marina a couple years ago down near Solomons. Anyone have comparison prices for western Maryland shore? Anything cheaper in the South River - Edgewater - Mayo - Galesville region appreciated.

Sorry Fast and the group....

there are some less than professional divers on the bay, who say they are doing XX and either don't or do a poor job. Or who have no clue how to "clean" the bottom as opposed to damage the bottom.

And the savings is minimal...$150 for a diver, $200 for a short haul in our area

Some of us want to be there and see first hand how things look and to verify that our hard earned $$ is well spent on what we want done. Firsthand is always best.

In the last year alone, two cases of wrong size zincs, and two cases of "scrapes" that ruined what bottom paint was there...bottom paint gouges you can sail with...a zinc that is rattling around your shaft is another question all together.

YMMV, and no I am not offering, endorsing or condoning ANYTHING, just offering my experience so that others may learn from those mistakes.

At Madden Marine (just across the creek from Oak Harbor) they charge $4/ft to haul and relaunch, and $1/ft for a powerwash ($35 minimum). Comes to $147 for my Newport 28, and they'll leave her on the slings for a bit if I want to poke around at stuff.

Those were last years' prices, which hadn't changed from the year before. As always, call for a current price.

No, I'm at White Rocks. But WR is a bit pricey for a lift'n'wash, and MM is just around the corner. They quoted me a good price for painting as well: $9/ft for powerwash, sanding and painting; $15 for sundries like sandpaper and such; and $102 for the lift and launch -- I pay for the paint.

I've tried various manuvers such as "How about if you lift and pad and I paint?" but it always works out about the same, because if they don't get labor for painting they bump up the lift and storage fees. I talked to White Rocks, Oak Harbor and Madden and got the same story at each place, but MM was the cheapest.

Short Haul Costs on Cheaspeake Bay

Everyone knows that I like to spend money on my boat -I do NOT like to spend on marinas!

My 2 cents.

I keep my boat at Old Bay Marina, outside of Baltimore on the Patapsco River.

They haul out several boats almost every day - this little sailboat boatyard moves more boats in one day than some of the big Annapolis Gucci yards do in a week.

Why - sailing folks are fed up with paying too much for "ambiance" when all we really need is an honest old-time boatyard to haul out our boats and not break the bank!

Old Bay only charges $4.50' for a quick haul and that includes a pressure wash and a barnacle scrape. They will sell you zincs at a low price and even install your new zinc anodes for FREE! And unlike the Solomons or Annapolis yards - the ticker is not running where they charge you by the minute if you need a little more time to install a seacokck or transducer. I did a quick haul in Solomons a few years back and needed to clean my engine intake - they told me that a quick haul meant QUICK and if I did not hurry up they would charge me for every half-hour I was in the sling. At Old Bay - they just go to "lunch" and say we will see you in an hour or two!

Remember that the coffee is just as tasty at Dunkin Donuts as it is at Starbucks. There are still places on the Chesapeake where you do not need to pay and arm and a leg to service your boat.

You make a good point FB, thanks...I will certainly consider doing so next time :) Any recs for a diver near Baltimore? I Have seen a few guys down at our marina before, should have grabbed a card...
Again, I am 3000 miles away, so I make no claims for any of these outfits, but here's what I got in your neck of the woods:

DMH Dive Service- DMH Dive Services - Search and Retrieve, overboard lost items, hull cleaning, boat maintenence in MD

Quick Haul Costs on Chesapeake Bay- Diver Woes

Be carefull of divers here on the Chesapeake Bay - In the summer you can only see a few inches in front of you because the bay water is so murky with algae. In San Fran Bay you can see a great distance while under water. In Baltimore Harbor - you are lucky to see an inch!

That is why when the boatyards haul out boats that divers "cleaned" you see one side of the prop clean and the other side full of barnacles - same goes for thru-hull openings - one or two clean - one full of seaweed and barnacles - same for the bottom - clean as a whistle in spots and other areas full of slime and nasty stuff. We also see zincs that divers put on come loose because they cannot properly use a heavy hammer to set the zinc to the shaft.

For a few dollars extra let the marina lift out your boat with a quarter of a million dollar travelift and blast the bottom, prop, shaft, and thru-hulls with their 4,000# roto water blaster. You can see what you just spent your money on - with a diver - it is hit or miss. And best of all - my marina install your zinc for free - see if a diver will install your zincs for free!

San Fran Bay you can see a great distance while under water.
Visibility varies greatly in San Francisco Bay depending primarily upon the weather. But nobody who has ever spent a minute in the water here would say you can see a "great distance."

I will not defend divers I have never met, working in a waterway that I have never seen. But I find it very difficult to believe that all, or even most, of the dive services in the Cheasapeake Bay Area are doing the poor quality work several have described as "typical" in this thread.

I just had a my Catalina 27 hauled, powerwashed, barnacles scraped, blocked for a week or so, tarped for work(clean marina) for $295 at Gateway Marina in Cambridge including splash. A short haul and powerwash/scrape was about $195 I think. The Chandlery has good prices and they can get you just about anything in a day or two. Great folks to deal with. Friendly, fun and affordable, I highly recommend.

Thanks for all the price checks around the Maryland western shore. Much appreciated. I think I will try and negotiate down where I am, but if that doesn't make it worth while will do a daysail up to the Patapsco and avail myself of some of the services there.

FWIW I could dive on my own boat, I'm certified. But I like to check out things below the waterline - myself - while the boat is lifted dry. I only paint every other year, so do a wipe down squeegee cleaning. And I like doing all this myself, as I do not trust the eyes of a basic boatyard worker who does not know my boat, or what it was like last time it was hauled, or if the zinc is going faster than before. Apart from knowing my boat, which they would not know, for all these yards charge for a hourly rates I have seen some appalling things that have escaped notice on other boats, but which were glaring for one who has eyes that care.

Shawn,

Everyone here at the club uses Patrick McMahon. Scary looking dude but does the job well.. diver-4-hire@hotmail.com. He just deslimed our boat. No barnacles or problems after staying in over the winter. used the same Micron EX you did as Ken did ours last year. Did red over blue and the red is still showing. We will get ours deslimed again before our trip to the Vinyard in early July.

Dave

I have no business affilation or interest with him.
