Lowrance Elite 5 Gold

Just bought a Lowrance Elite 5 Gold at the Defender spring sale. Less than $300 after rebate.

I played with a demo in the store, and the 5 inch screen is really an enormous upgrade from my Garmin 72 (monochrome) hand held. The fishfinder is more than I need, but it comes with a transducer, and at that price, I couldn't buy a dedicated depthfinder (something I don't have now) and new gps for the same amount.

Any one have experience with this unit? It got generally very favorable reviews on line. Any installation tips?

Thanks.

I purchased one last year. I like it. I have not yet tried to install the transducer, but someday intend to.

I also upgraded from a monochrome GPSMAP 76. It was like going from the Green Acres phone at the top of the pole to an Iphone.

OK, maybe not that extreme.... :)

Those with big touch screen displays connected to wind, AIS, radar, autohelm, etc. may not be impressed but for the money its a nice little unit and suits my needs well.

Unfortunately he got this at Defender's annual spring sale that was on last weekend. So that is over. There is a $100 rebate still available though.

I just finished installing one in a friends boat. We took the Intercostal from Galveston to Freeport (TX) and the nav worked great. We installed the transducer in wax to use through the hull. (This was recommended to keep from drilling the hull) It had issues when first turned on and the depth was not functioning. After some period of time (sorry, I did not pay close enough attention to note how much time it took, it was quite some time) it started to record depth correctly.
