See that the valve mentioned is CLOSED Is this valve Open or Closed? | SailNet Community
The boat has been hauled out for 8 months.
Splashed yesterday and motored 9nms going fairly quickly to give the engine a bit of a run.
Upon splashing I OPEN the sea chocks for the engine and Shaft Seal.
2 nms and we heard a quiet 'howling' from the engine.
Dropped it back from 2100 rpm to neutral momentarilly and back up and the how didnt come back for a few minutes.
Dropped the revs again and again it stops for a while. Sort of discounts transmission.
So look to Volvo shaft seal.
I squeeze the black rubber seal and the water that comes out is VERY hot. Not boiling but too hot to let the water pass over my fingers for long.
The Shaft Seal Valve is in the OPEN position
As a test I close it shaft seal valve and there seems to be MORE water coming through the black rubber seal.
I take a temperature of the shaft at the seal and the seal and its 39C and 42 C respectivly. (102F and 107F)
I re-engage the engine and run the engine at lower revs and no howling. The shaft and seal temperature drops to 38/39 C (100/102F).
Temp stays low as I bring the engine back to about 1900 rpm.
On enterning a safe anchorable area I do about 1nm at WOT, Wide Open Throttle, max revs and the shaft and the shaft seal does not get any hotter. The water comeing through when I squeeze the black seal is hot but not too hot.
OK so I think Problem solved The handle of the valve has been put on upside down but no, you've confirmed in the other thread the valve is closed.
Soooo....
What the hell is happening? Why does it overheat when the valve is OPEN?
What should I do? Run with it closed?
