This is a much discussed topic here and on a number of sailing blogs and in magazines, and in my opinion the answer is one that only you can provide - some folks make it (reportedly) on $500 a month, some spend ten times that......here are a few links:

From a Sailnetter that has very graciously shared monthly cruising costs for over a year now - this is just one of his posts:

A quick Google search brings up a lot more links:

I have been living on my boat and sort of cruising for 5 months now and I'm averaging a bit less that $3k per month......

You can probably do it on $2k a month, but maybe not....a lot depends on your lifestyle needs and how good your luck is. A few mechanical, family, or health issues can drive that number way up in any given month.

I have maintained a slip in a marina as a home base the last few months, and do enjoy a nice meal out with a friend occasionally. I also have health insurance.

Definitely look at Don's budget / cost numbers over the last 15 months - they provide a great template for you to use to tailor a budget to your specific cicrumstances.
