Shaft oil

I noticed on my yanmar 2qm15 not only there is an engine oil fill there is also an oil fill in the rear by the shaft. My question is how often should this oil be checked or changed? I have changed my engine oil twice but never done anything with this. I also wonder what type of oil is used here, for example should it be the same oil as what is used in the engine fill?

when you say by the shaft, are you talking about mounted on the engine or toward the back where the shaft exits the boat?

If engine mounted, that could be the transmission. Oil type should be printed on a metal plate on the side of which type of oil to use.

If it's where the shaft exits, I'm thinking a drip-less unit that replaced the standard stuffing box. I've seen some use oil or water injection to keep the area lubricated.

If not either of these, maybe posting a picture of what you're seeing may help.
